Tutbury Cricket Club – A Building for the Future.
Tutbury Cricket Club, a vibrant and well-loved community sports hub in Staffordshire, has seen remarkable growth and success over recent years. With over 200 players and 11 active teams, including several junior squads and thriving adult sides, the club is not only a centre for local sport but also a pillar of the village.
In 2024, the 2nd team earned promotion in the Derbyshire Cricket League, a huge achievement, but one that brought new challenges. League requirements mandated essential facility upgrades, and the club needed a partner who could deliver a rapid, compliant and community-focused solution.
Project Aims
To meet the Derbyshire Cricket League’s new requirements, the club needed to provide a dedicated Umpires’ room, a new scorer facility, a girls’ changing space to support the number of female players, a multi-functional space that could be used for village events, including evening gatherings servicing drinks, and all this to be completed by March 2025!
The new building would not only support matchday operations but become an asset to the wider community, a space capable of hosting events for groups of people and further integrating the club with village life.
The Challenges
The project came with its share of challenges. First, planning permission was required. Roundpeg brought in JMI Planning to help prepare and submit the necessary documentation and drawings.
The structure had to be carefully designed to serve multi-purposes, from hosting Umpires’ and scorers on match days to functioning as a social hub for the village. Funding posed another challenge, but the club built on its previous fundraising success by launching a new crowdfunding campaign. This, combined with support from Sport England specifically for the girls’ changing area, enabled the project to move forward.
The Impact
The results have had a meaningful impact. The Umpire now has a private, purpose-built space, and the scorers benefit from a modern facility with great views of the pitch. Most significantly, the club can now better accommodate its growing number of female players, offering a dedicated changing area. The new building also opens to hosting more community events and future plans include outdoor decking to improve the space even further.
The Outcome
Despite working against a tight timeline and navigating a few planning permission complexities, Roundpeg delivered the project on time and to a high standard.
The building was completed before the start of the 2025 season, ensuring Tutbury Cricket Club met its league obligations and could celebrate promotion without compromise. More than just a facility upgrade, this project has strengthened the club’s role at the heart of the community and provided a platform for continued growth both on and off the pitch. Tutbury now has a new space that reflects both its ambition and its community spirit.
